Hi out there, it's day 3 of the
new times.
They said the city was closed down below 14 st., but who the hell are
"they" anyway. so i head for the city to check on some friends
I get off the train in the west village in the middle of nyu.. the streets
are devoid of cars, except emergency vehicles. I'm an old hippie at heart
so I went where all the old hippies used to go when we felt we had to
gather together to fight an unjust war (re:Vietnam): Washington
Square park. the circle around the fountain (the fountain of peace
we used to call it), was filled with poets, musicians and people who were
not to be deterred by outside forces.
Walking thru the village was earie. first there were no cars, most stores
were closed, but restaurants, bars and convenience stores were open. I
went to Club 101 (101 seventh ave. south)
the cafe doors were thrown open to welcome all.
This was a main access road to what has become known as ground zero. Many
a nite I would be outside, watching nyc live. When I looked south now
where once stood the pillars of freedom, all you saw was a massive pillar
of smoke. The smell was everywhere I sat with 2 police officers while
they took a well-deserved dinner break and the bartender (who served in
the Israeli army for 4 yrs.), and we exchanged perspectives on what happened
and how we and the rest of the city, have continued on. There would be
no live music here tonite.
Arlene's was closed so that meant the Brilliant
Mistakes were not to be this evening. I proceeded east and saw
2 awesome basketball games at West 3 st. and 6 ave. this was pure hotdog/showtime
ball at it's best. then on to The
Groove (W. 3 st. and Macdougal) where shows were also cancelled including
this saturdays' jazz brunch (a Stemway event).
I proceeded onward to acme underground (great jones place and lafayette
st.) emiko, blush66 and squint all had been postponed, but the place was
packed with people eating and talking and watchin the tv's. The next stop
was Continental (St. mark's pl. and 3 ave)
as I talked to Trigger (the owner) he said no live music till next week,
that meant no LOURDS / 69
nova show on thurs.
After a few brews it was time to continue..St. Marks pl was alive with
people walking in the streets (no cars below 14 st.) Next stop an old
dive, Marz bar (2 ave & 2 st.) Keeva
the bartender, was friendly but busy, so I played video games, and continued
brewskies. I tried to go to Motor City Bar
but the police wouldn't let us below Houston st. Usually I cab it home
but there were no taxis so into the ground I went and found that the trains
were riding better than usual. I decided to rest up thurs. the better
to party on the w/e.
So until next time Peace thru Strength and Wisdom.

ALL WEEK : |
All week the Sidewalk cafe
(east 7st. & ave A) will be open for food and live music, poetry,
comedy plus... Say hello to Lach (pronounced
latch), he's doing his version of what I like to call the F**K THEM
attitude of not letting them stop the arts and the freedom to express
it which is what makes this country what it is (despite Rudy's attempts
to the contrary.) |
Take Care,
