On Saturday October 6th, I went to see an old friend DAVID
JOHANSEN at the BOTTOM LINE.
He did an old BUSTER POINDEXTER favorite
"Heart of Gold" acoustically with solos by the drums,
bass and the rest of the band and it was awesome. Next we ran
uptown to the MEDICINE HAT THEATRE (52nd
St. b/w 10th & 11th Ave.) to see LOURDS
who was also playing acoustic that night with T.J.
JORDAN, her guitarist. This was another benefit and she
was up to it. Chris, the girl who
ran the show, had a great lineup, but LOURDS
the show.
Sunday the 7th was yet another benefit for the Firemen at HENRIETTA
HUDSON'S (c/o Morton & Hudson St.). The lineup was
TUT, with my friend ALICIA wailing
on guitar. Some poetry followed, then LOURDS
came out and played "THE STAR SPANGLED
BANNER" just by herself and the place stopped dead
in their tracks. T.J.Jordan then joined her for another wild acoustic
set, and the TARA LYNNE BAND followed.
A lot of money was raised for the families of the nearby firehouse.
We went to the LUNA LOUNGE (Ludlow
b/w orchard & Stanton St.) had a few drinks and I headed for
my usual last stop. For some reason I passed by ARLENE'S
GROCERY (95 Stanton st) and I noticed that THE
BAND OF GEORGE wasplaying, so I went in and they were filming
for THE ANTI-CHAT SHOW BE YOURSELF AS WELL
AS ART. Tom Regan was on the camera and the band was smokin',
and eventually I made it to MOTOR CITY BAR.
Tuesday the 9th, there was another benefit at KENNY'S CASTAWAYS
(Bleeker St. b/w Thompson & Sullivan St.). This was for some
Supreme Court Officers who lost their lives trying to help out
during the chaos. THE ROBERT ROSS BAND
w/ANGELO OLIVIERI on bass played a great set but that wasn't all.
LONNIE LISTON SMITH played his style of blues, followed by one
of the greatest collection of musicians in NY if not the world.
GORDON EDWARDS and STUFF,
WILL LEE, PAUL
SCHAEFFER and I can't remember all of the guys who played
their hearts out for a packed house full of court officers. I
had to leave in the middle to go see DUNCAN
at the CUTTING ROOM (24th St. b/w
6th Ave. & Broadway), this was a benefit for
NY CARES, another great charity, and they had a wild auction.
DUNCAN was great but I wanted to
get back KENNY'S for the rest of
the show.
It was CMJ festival time in NY so
I went to THE CONTINENTAL (3rd Ave.
@ St. Mark's Pl.) on Thurs 10/11, headlining that night was LOURDS
with a full band this time and she whipped the packed house into
a frenzy. HURRYUP OFFENSE followed
with a hard rockin' set. I was back at the CONTINENTAL
on sat 10/13 for 69NOVA (www.69nova.com).
TUESDAY led the boys through their
paces, starting slowly but building to a crescendo that blew the
roof off the place. The KOWALSKIS were to follow a couple of bands
later but I wanted to try to get to see
DADDY at DON HILL'S (511 Greenwich
St. c/o spring St.) I missed them and got stuck listening to a
band that they must have found in the decaf section of Starbucks.
Keep your eyes and ears open for some more benefits.
ON SUN. 10/28 FRANK WOOD presents a benefit for the families
of SQUAD 1 in Brooklyn. This will be a sendoff for Two Chicks
and a Casio(www.twochicksandacasio.com) before they head to the
west coast. They will be followed by HUEY LYNCH and friends (these
are actual members of Squad 1),
BLACK FLAMINGO (www.mp3.com/blackflamingo),GOD-THE
BAND, and 69 NOVA (www.69nova.com).
