What's Good - By Frank Wood | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
Hi there, things are getting more hectic as the opening of the new 10/50 LOUNGE approaches. But I still have to be out there. It's a rough job, but someone has to do it. On wed. the 24, I went to see 2 bands that will be performing
at the opening of the 10/50
LOUNGE, Thurs. the 25 was a Stemway.com promotion for the guys from NY law school at the LAFAYETTE BAR and GRILL (Franklin st b/w Bwy. & Lafayette st). The TOM STINSON JAZZ TRIO was the musical performers with a special appearace by Richard Bartee and his moving vocals. Tom's keyboards were backed by Dave Post on bass and Paul on drums. This place has great food and the guys who run it (Dino, Billy and George) are always happy to make everyone feel at home. We followed that up with a trip to the RODEO BAR (357 3ave) to see SHECKY DAVIS and the TWANGTONES ( Shecky/guitar, Ted"Big Tasty"/bass, Joni/keys, and Sal/drums) breeze thru some classic surf music. I was tempted by the smell of bbq sauce and I lost with my selection. This was compounded by the broken(and only) toilet to make this not one of my better outings. I bought an egg roll next door just so I could use theirs, (I paid for it and left it behind). JONNY CHAN and the NEW DYNASTY 6 were at ARLENE's GROCERY (95 stanton st) on fri. the 26, and these guy played some serious kickass R&R. With customized t-shirts and tight performance this was rock the way it's supposed to be. Mighty Joe Vincent's drums and Tommy Jade's bass pushed Wayne Sweeney and Jonnys' guitars over the top. Climaxing with Jonny's table dance for the ladies. But it there would be no letdown tonite, WOUNDED was at KENNY's CASTAWAY (bleeker st,b/w sullivan and thompson sts). T.J.Jordan (LOURDS' guitarist) leads this 3 piece power unit. Nick on drums had his shirt off by the 2nd song, and Steve's bass playing was just as fast and clean and sharp as T.J's guitar. Finishing off the crowd with "Little Wing". LOURDS was in Jersey City on sat. and I don't know how T.J. can perform at that intensity on consecutive nites . LOURDS was more pumped than usual due to the fact that she was playing for her "peeps" as she put it (it was a primarily Filipino crowd). STEMWAY.COM, NYROCK.COM and FRANK WOOD PRESENTS held a benefit for the families of the heroes from SQUAD 1 in Brooklyn at ARLENE's on sun and it was an astounding success from the start with Huey Lynch from Squad 1 carrying out (fireman style) first LEAH, then MARIANNE of TWO CHICKS AND A CASIO (www.twochicksandacasio.com) to start the show to a hillarious start of a wild evening. This was their last show before taking their ironing board and their casio to the west coast. They had the place forgetting for awhile the pain of the past few weeks. They were followed by HUEY LYNCH and his band THRESHHOLD. Huey is a member of Squad 1, and to honor his fellow heroes, he reunited his old band for the first time in 10 years. Roger and Ron (drums and bass) were right in the groove with Huey on guitar and vocals so much that they were talking about keeping the band together and picking up where they left off. BLACK FLAMINGO (www.mp3.com/blackflamingo) did two songs, one written in the aftermath of recent events. Then out came GOD-THE BAND. The following are their names as told to me: drums/Sohnny Amnotapeea, bass/Bartles B Tooth (last minute substitute), keys/Rollo Royce, guitar/Mugwump and led by Danny Rockets on guitar. These guys put the levity back in the evening with their outrageous choreography and Rollo's wadrobe changes. They were a perfect compliment to the 2 CHICKS and will be doubled up with the girls when they finish their conquest of the west coast. The icing on the cake was a spirited performance by 69 NOVA (www.69nova.com). Tuesday was as sultry and exotic as ever, and with Joe/guitar, Mike/bass and Dave/drums, they changed the complexion of the audience into a dancing , happy mob. In all the sold out house raised alot of $$$ for a worthwhile cause. As I mentioned before the grand opening of the 10/50 LOUNGE is in 2 weeks, so I gotta get back to work, what with 14 bands and many surprises I have it cut out for me. |
