December 9, 2001 | What's Good - By Frank Wood | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Hi everyone! It's been awile so I'll try to catch up.. LOURDS
shows are always great and on 11/12 at Downtime was no exception. On 11/16 LOURDS was at the cutting room, and by the third song she had that uptight crowd on the tables dancing. The GRAVEYARD SLUT and JONESCRUSHER played the PARKSIDE LOUNGE on the 21st and after fixing the amp gremlins everything just rocked thru. The 25th brought back thesounds of MADJUANA at MEOW MIX. The influences of their summer in spain were apparent and welcome. There was a wild show at the TORCH on the 28th, that featured Sammi and Karmen from MADJUANA playing and singing and NY's only Japanese belly-dancer JAMEELA doing what she does better than anyone else in this city. The cd recording at CBGB on the 29 was a fantastic 1-2-3 punch of JOY RYDER and the NY RHYTHM ALL-STARS, followed by LOURDS, and then the unsinkable ANNIE GOLDEN. I hate to sound repetitive but on Nov 30th LOURDS was again the dominating act of the nite at ARLENE's GROCERY Giorgio Gimelsky (former manager of the YARDBIRDS and the ROLLING STONES) has a place called THE GREEN DOOR on West 24 st. and I was there to catch VASQUEZ featuring SAMMI YAFFA on bass on fri the 7th. Bob Gruen was taking photos and the place had the feel of the old MAX'S KANSAS CITY. Finally on sat Decemeber 8th , 69 NOVA performed their last show of 2001 at the CONTINENTAL, and I can't wait till 2002. That's all for now, here are WOOD's PICKS : |
