NEW YORK WASTE, Summer 2012

MAX's KANSAS CITY 2012 REUNION
by
FRANK WOOD

Back in the 70's when PUNK ROCK and the NEW WAVE had its inception there were two places to go for this new, outrageous form of Rock'n'Roll - CBGB's or MAX's KANSAS CITY!

At CBGB's HILLY ran the show and he just let things happen, and they did! While over at MAX's KANSAS CITY, PETER CROWLEY made things happen! Bands played at both places, and many others that started to pop up, but the places to be for the Best and most innovative music were CB's and MAX's!

This year from June 7 until June 10, PETER returned to NYC for the 2012 MAX's KANSAS CITY REUNION, and he brought a bunch of the old guys and gals (the ones that were still alive) back for some GREAT nights of Rock'n'Roll! The BOWERY ELECTRIC was the place to be on these nights (with an after party at ARLENE's GROCERY on Saturday the 9th)!

It started with the NEW YORK JUNK featuring CYNTHIA ROSS from the B GIRLS and JOE SZTABNICK from THE DRAGONS with the Amazing GARY on drums. This crew has been playing around as often as CYNTHIA can get down from Toronto (which is usually once a month).

RUBY & THE REDNECKS were up next and RUBY was in fine form, considering she almost died a few years ago. STEVE GREENFIELD and the rest of her band had the place jumping!

Old favorites SEAMONSTER have been playing steadily since the old days and came out and blew people away with their tight arrangements and rollicking good Rock! ARTHUR is a solid presence up front with MIKE ROCK, FREDDY, ARTHUR and GNO providing some of the best Biker Rock around! They were even joined by the chicken!

THE RATTLERS took the stage with front man MICKEY LEIGH, who wrote the book "I Slept With Joey Ramone" (his brother)! Providing some solid punk rock they kept the show moving along until JAYNE COUNTY & THE ELECTRIC CHAIRS took the stage!

JIMI LALUMIA from the PSYCHOTIC FROGS was the MC who shared some tales from the old days and introduced JAYNE's band for the night, JOE RIZZO from the WALDOS was on drums with CHRIS GARI on bass and ELLIOT MICHAELS form JAYNE's old band - WAYNE COUNTY & THE BACK STREET BOYS! These guys rocked like it was still 1977! JAYNE was also joined by JOY RYDER, & DONNA DESTRI on a few songs. It ended with the old song "Down at MAX"S KANSAS CITY" where everyone from RUBY, ANGIE BOWIE and even PETER joining in! DJ LA LA LINDA kept every dancing between and after the bands.

Friday night the party continued with THE BRATS, THE SHIRTS, AVANT DUEL with VON ELMO, THE SICK FUCKS, and BILLY RATH's STREET PIRATES. BILLY was a former member of JOHNNY THUNDERS' HEARTBREAKERS. DJ TRIGG THE WONDERKID held down the DJ Duties.

Saturday night the show stated with STUMBLEBUNNY, another one of the old school survivors who recently reformed with new members to replace those that are no longer here. JAHN XAVIER, the man with the wondrous pipes followed with his band. THE PLANETS weren't that far behind leading into THE WALDOS, WALTER LURE's band. JOE RIZZO was behind the drums with E Z and TAKO on the guitar & bass. These guys have been consistently been playing to sold out shows over the years keeping the flame of JOHNNY THUNDERS' HEARTBREAKERS alive, of which WALTER was an integral part. THE NIHILISTICS closed out the night at BOWERY ELECTRIC before we moved the show over to ARLENE's GROCERY for an after party!

Whoever was supposed to be the MC never showed, so FRANK WOOD (me) graciously (some might say greedily) took over MC and Stage Manager duties! RONNIE DECAL started and led into some Burlesque from BROOKLYN BABY DOLL.

BUDDY LOVE, with JOEY KELLY, have been playing together since 1979, with the SAME 4 band members, and they played just as good, if not better than when they were kids!

Up next was JOY RYDER & HER BAND Du JOUR consisting of DANNY RAY, JIM SATIN and DAVE DAWSON. JOY's old band, THE DAVIS RYDER BAND played many a show at both MAX's and CB's and she's still out their with one of the Best voices in the NYC Rock Scene.

The Phenomenal PHOEBE LEGERE joined the SOVEREIGN LORDS for a song that was completely out of this world with her Christmas light dress. SCHEEBO from THE STILLETTOS played drums with the SOVEREIGN LORDS as TALLY belted out the songs.

GINA HARLOW & THE CUTTHROATS was proof that the girls from back in the day still kick ass over most of these kids today. These young singers today can only pray that they look and sound as good as GINA, JOY, DONNA, PHOEBE and CYNTHIA. THE word MILF was made for these HOT WOMEN! GINA'S BAND had 2 bass players, GINA AND CHRIS GARI, with DANNY RAY on sax and JOE RIZZO (again) on drums. IVAN RODRIGUES handled the DJ duties.

Sunday night it closed up back at BOWERY ELECTRIC with DJ Mr. EARL (PETER again) and a Rockabilly themed night!Starting with MARTIN BUTLER BAND, HONEY DAVIS, ORDINARY GIRLS (featuring members of CHEAP PERFUME), THE FREDDY FROGGS MEMORIAL BAND (featuring members of FOUR ON THE FLOOR, ROCKABILLY EXPRESS, SMUTT SMIFF and others), DEE POP EXPERIENCE, THE ROUSERS, KING BEE & THE STINGERS (BUDDY BOWZER and SCHEEBO) and from the Broadway play MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET - EDDIE CLENDENING & THE BLUE RIBBON BOYS!

It was 4 days of PURE JOY!

Can't wait 'til the next reunion!

ROCK'n'ROLL is still ALIVE in NYC!

THANK YOU, PETER CROWLEY for 4 days of Rock'n'Roll Memories!
